Waiting on Wednesday: The Last Leaves Falling by Sarah Benwell

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.  Its purpose is to spotlight eagerly-anticipated upcoming releases.

This week I’m eagerly awaiting:

The Last Leaves Falling by Sarah Benwell

Expected Release Date: January 29, 2015

And these are they. My final moments. They say a warrior must always be mindful of death, but I never imagined that it would find me like this . . .

Japanese teenager, Sora, is diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Lonely and isolated, Sora turns to the ancient wisdom of the samurai for guidance and comfort. But he also finds hope in the present; through the internet he finds friends that see him, not just his illness. This is a story of friendship and acceptance, and testing strength in an uncertain future.

(summary via Goodreads)

I just realized that the book’s main character has the same name as the protagonist in the first Kingdom Hearts videogame (hi I’m a nerd), and I’m not sure why this connection is so interesting to me.  It’s just a coincidence, duh.  At any rate, this looks like a sad, unusual take on the kid-with-a-disease trope.  (Part of me is just super glad there’s no mention of it being a book in the same vein of TFiOS, so.)

Probably pretty sad, but it looks interesting.

What are you waiting on this week?
