Lists and Procrastination: 5 Things I’m into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  hereherehereherehere,  hereherehere, hereherehere, and here.

1. Pink – “Try” Video

I’m actually not super into the song–I think it’s kind of boring (sorry, Pink), but the choreography in the video is super awesome.  I love that she did all of it herself.  Plus, her hair looks dope (even if she is sort of copying my girl Robyn).  I actually watch the video with the sound off (that’s how much I don’t care about the music).

2. Tiny Tower for iPhone

Yeah, I’ve become that person.  I finally caved and got a smartphone, and the result is that I am now obsessed with a totally silly game called Tiny Tower.  (It’s getting to the point where J. feels like he’s competing for attention with this game).  The game is simple: build a tower, move people in, and keep providing new stores and restaurants for them.  It’s totally addictive and totally stupid.  LOVE IT.

3. “Best of” booklists at Chicken Spaghetti

This is a great place to track all the best of booklists being published as we approach the end of the year (it’s coming up fast!).  Bookmark it now; peruse at your leisure.

4. Nicki Minaj featuring Cassie – “The Boys” (NSFW)

The video is as tonally off as the chorus to the song.  I’ve listened to this thing a bunch of times, and I still can’t figure out what they were going for exactly. I just know that I like it, and I love watching Minaj and Cassie interact.  Quick question: which lady got the better boob job?

5. Cookie recipes

Call me obsessed.  I’m super into figuring out what cookies I’m going to make for Christmas-cookie exchanges this year.  Pinterest, you will be the death of me.

What are you into at the moment?

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, here, here, herehere, here, here, here, here, and here.

1. Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools (Drank)

I don’t know what it is about this particular song that I find so interesting, but I do know that I can’t stop listening to it.  Kendrick Lamar’s album is probably the best new album I’ve been listening to a lot, and this song is one of my pump-up songs before I go out.  There’s something completely voyeuristic about listening to Lamar’s whole album, and this song definitely showcases his talent at creating songs with soul-baring lyrics.

2. Wanelo.com

This one is embarrassing because it’s so consumption-driven.  I like to troll the websites pictures because they have some ridiculous stuff for sale.  They also have some really cool stuff.  I’m not going to lie: I want the sweatshirt with the mermaid dance quote on it from Pitch Perfect.

3. Crafting a decent holiday gift list

I’m not going to lie: I have a hard time picking out presents for people, whether it’s birthdays, parent days, or the holidays.  I try to start fairly far in advance so that I can get what I need to get for the people closest to me.  This year, I’m spending a lot of time trying to figure out what to get people that isn’t a total waste of time or money.  I also value giving gifts that the person will actually use.  In order to do this, I’m making liberal use of Pinterest, Wanelo, Uncommon Goods, and Evernote (to track it all, duh).

4. French Bulldog Puppy

I stumbled across this while doing searches for stupidly cute animals.  I don’t know what it is about this short video I find so endearing or affecting.  I just know that it makes me stupidly happy.  How can you not love it?  I just want him to get up at the end.  YOU CAN DO IT.

5. Stacked Books hosts Contemporary YA Week

Have you checked out Stacked Book’s Contemporary YA week?  If you haven’t you should.  They have tons of great recommendations, discussions, and information about my favorite genre.  There are great lists of books (my favorite thing in the world) for any YA fan to geek out over.  This is a blog that consistently delivers some of the best content on the internet (in my humble opinion).  GO AND SEE.

What are you obsessed with this week?

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, here, here, herehere, here, here, here, and here.

1. Creepers by Kid Cudi

Without a doubt the best song off Kanye West’s new Cruel Summer compliation, Kid Cudi’s “Creepers” is the song that’s on repeat in my house, despite my roommate’s increasingly vocal objections.  There’s something about the song that’s so inherently catchy I can hardly stand it.  My favorite part of the song is when Cudi says, “If I had one wish it’d be for more wishes–DUH.”  It’s that kind of smart, self-aware lyric that makes this song a standout on an (admittedly lackluster) album.

2. The Cybils

I wouldn’t be totally honest if I didn’t admit that the Cybil nominations are taking up a lot of my time.  Nominations have only been open for a week, and there’s still plenty of time to submit titles for consideration (just make sure you read the rules first).  I’m neck-deep in reading nominated titles and talking about the books with my fellow panelists, and it feels great.  I’m averaging about a book a day, which means that I’m reading a lot. I can’t wait to share my thoughts about some of these books with you.

3. Planning the Halloween party of the century

Of course that’s hyperbole.  Of course it is.  My roommate and I live in a two-bedroom duplex, so it’s unlikely that this will be the party of the century–but we are putting a lot of thought and work into it.  She’s got decorations up the wazoo, is hard at work at making our costumes, and I’m busy planning a food menu that won’t suck.  I don’t want to give away all the details, but there’s dry ice involved. EXCITING I KNOW.

4. The return of Fall TV

My schedule doesn’t permit me to watch a lot of shows live (and I hate ads so much I probably wouldn’t, anyway), but that doesn’t mean that I’m not watching and tracking the returning fall TV season.  I’m already behind on things–I forgot about the premiere of Scandal, and I’ve heard good things about Last Resort and mixed things about Revolution–and hope to catch up eventually.  In the mean time, I’ve been enjoying the hell out of Parenthood (which you probably already know) and New Girl.

5. Christina Aguilera – “Your Body”

Have you guys seen this video?  It’s crazy, and not in a good way.  I can’t tell exactly what Aguilera was going for, but I have a sneaking suspicion that she was trying to take a page out of the Beyonce/Lady Gaga “Telephone” book (see what I did there?!?!).  The result is…not good.  But the scene with the pink glitter is cool, and the wig budget alone must have been insane.

What are you into this month?

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, here, here, herehere, here, here, and here.

1. Grimes – “Oblivion”

I don’t know what it is about this video that I find so compelling, I just know that it’s one I’ve revisited several times since discovering it.  I like Grimes’s music in general, and there’s something so odd about this video.  All of it feels very authentic– from the moment at the beginning where the girl flips up Grimes’s hood to the moment where Grimes waves a fan through across the camera’s line while she’s singing.  It’s not linear, and it doesn’t really make any sense, but neither does the song, really.  That might be why I like it so much.  Also, I kind of want pink bangs.

2. The fall premiere of Switched at Birth

I love this show to an embarrassing level, and I’m so glad it’s back.  As much as it hurts to watch, I like what the show is doing with Bay and Emmett’s characters.  It’s weird to watch the new episodes after just completing  a re-watch of the first season because everyone looks just a little bit…different.  Daphne’s hair is redder (though she’s still doing that annoying face thing she does when she’s worried or uncomfortable or whatever), Bay looks thinner (which is a bummer, man), etc. etc.  I still think the Angelo subplot is the show’s weakest link, but that might just be me.  Are you watching? Are you as obsessive as I am?

3. David Guetta – “Titanium” (ft. Sia)

The video itself is whatever (I mean, yeah, that’s one of the kids from Super 8), but for some reason, I’m super into the song these days.  I’m sure I’ve exhausted my neighbors from overplaying the song while I’m getting ready to go out, but oh well.  Call it my song of the late summer, because I’m officially obsessed.

4. Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer

I’m unsure of whether or not I’ll ever actually review this book, but I do want to talk about it on the blog since it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.  The book focuses on the rise of Fundamentalist Mormons in the United States, and it’s a fascinating, extremely accessible read.  I’m riveted by what I’m reading, and that’s a rarity with non-fiction.

5. The onset of Halloween season

Okay, so maybe it’s a little early to be this excited about Halloween, but ever since my roommate and I decided to throw a Halloween party, she and I have been in full party-planning mode.  Both of us are huge fans of Halloween in general, and she loves to craft and decorate, so we’re going way over-the-top with our plans for this party.  I can’t wait for October (I realize we’re not there yet) and Halloween and candy and costumes and just general awesomeness.

What are you into these days?

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m Into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, here, here, herehere, and here.

1. Awkward.

Despite the fact that I think the show’s tone is sometimes a little off (and recognize that might be the point), I can’t help but like this quirky, almost too-glib show on MTV about a really awkward teen girl who ends up in a sort of love triangle with two boys who are at the top of the high school food chain.  Although I think the show relies too heavily on the love-triangle aspect of the show, it’s also got some smart writing, good acting, and great music (seriously).  I haven’t started watching the second season yet, but as it’s just started, I expect to catch up soon.

2. Extra Hot Great Podcast

What’s better than three geeks talking about TV, movies, and pop culture?  Pretty much nothing, which is why this is my favorite podcast these days.  Tara Ariano, David T. Cole, and Joe Reid weigh in on everything from the latest movie to the best/worst TV show.  Of course the week I decide to feature this on the blog, the creators of the podcast have announced that they’re ending the podcast (two of them are moving to L.A. and have some sort of other project in the works).  That being said, there’s still a lot of backlog podcasts to listen to, and if you want, you can follow them on Twitter (Tara Ariano is my absolute fave).

3. “My Fault” by Imagine Dragons

It’s not a single, so there’s no video for it, but this song by Imagine Dragons is one of my favorites right now.  I don’t know why this song speaks to me so much, but it does.  It’s my summer song, you guys.

4. Best Albums of 2012…so far

You can’t seem to go two clicks on the internet without stumbling over someone coming up with a list of the best albums of 2012…so far.  As someone who consumes an immense amount of music (I average 3-5 albums a week. A WEEK), I pride myself on keeping current with what’s out, both mainstream and obscure.  That being said, a lot of these lists suggest bands I’ve never heard of.  Which is always a nice dose of humility for my music hubris.

Here are some of the best of lists available: Spin, Rolling Stone, Paste, NPR, The Guardian

I don’t know who was doing the picking over at The Guardian, but listing both Lana Del Rey and Nicki Minaj should be grounds for automatic disqualification.

There are some ones I agree with: Best Coast, Beach House, Japandroids, and The Men.  Anything you’ve been listening to that you think warrants a space on the best of the year…so far?

5. Channel Orange by Frank Ocean

I’ve been listening to this album nonstop over the past few days.  It’s definitely one of the best albums of the year.  The entire thing is great, but I love “Pyramids” and “Super Rich Kids.”  If you haven’t heard Ocean’s music before, you’re missing out.  “Novacane” was my jam for a hot minute late last year, and this album is definitely the most exciting thing I’ve heard in a long time.  Seriously worth checking out.

Movie Blather and Randomness

Another Saturday, another post about movie news.  I have been completely apathetic about the movies I’ve seen lately and can’t be bothered to write a full review for any of them, so you get this instead.  ONWARD.

1. Pitch Perfect’s trailer is out and it looks…awesome?

Okay.  I’m super embarrassed about this one, but I’m also strangely excited.  The movie stars Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, and Rebel Wilson as collegiates who join an all-girl a capella group and face off against some dudes. It looks totally predictable (down to the jokes about Wilson’s weight, which is a bummer), but the music is guaranteed to be fun (Ace of Base and Blackstreet, what up).  I’m a sucker for music in general and secretly love a capella.  This reminds me of Glee if Glee wasn’t ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE in EVERY SINGLE WAY.

2. As the Emmy’s approach, so does speculation about nominees

The Emmy Awards (usually held in September) are about to release their list of nominees for this year, and there’s a lot of speculation about who will be nominated.  One of the most interesting categories is the movie/miniseries category, because there are so many great contenders this year.  Deadline has a great rundown of what will probably be nominated.  My vote: Game Change.  I really enjoyed that one.

3. 2 Days in New York, the sequel to 2 Days in Paris, has a trailer

I loved Julie Delpy’s dramatic comedy 2 Days in Paris, and I had no idea she was making a sequel (this feels like a pop culture failure on my part, and I’m bummed about it).  This one stars Delpy and Chris Rock, who has toned down the annoying and might actually be sort of sweet.  In this movie, her very French parents come to visit and chaos ensues.  It’s definitely a retread of the first film, but I’m excited to see it all the same.

4. A sequel (threequel?) to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset is set to begin filming this summer

Speaking of Julie Delpy (and really, why don’t we speak of her more often?), Ethan Hawke has confirmed that a follow up to 1995′s Before Sunrise and 2004′s Before Sunset is in the works and should be shot this summer.  I loved, loved, loved these two movies and am excited that there will be a third movie about Jesse and Celeste.  Even though I think the last film ended on the perfect note, I’ll see this one and see what Richard Linklater has in store for the characters. (Indiewire)

5. Have you seen the trailer for The Queen of Versailles?

Tapping into America’s bizarre obsession watching reality shows featuring the rich and irrelevant, this documentary follows a couple as they attempt to build the biggest house in the United States–right before the economy tanked.  It looks funny, sad, and profound, and I can’t wait to see it.  I really can’t.  This is one documentary I won’t wait to see on DVD–this is theater-worthy.

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m Into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, here, here, here, and here.

1. Tired Pony – “Get On the Road” (featuring Zooey Deschanel)

The live videos of this song have another woman singing Deschanel’s part, and they don’t do it for me the way the original version does.  As a result, you have a link to a youtube video that’s mostly just audio.  It’s still worth it, though.  I’m so obsessed with this song right now that it almost hurts.  I think something about the two voices together works incredibly well.  The lyrics resonate deeply with me and are all sorts of inspiring for the story that I’m working on these days.

2. The Unusuals on Netflix

It’s no secret that I’m kind of in love with Jeremy Renner.  I think he’s a really great actor (and he sings, too, if you didn’t know), and okay, yes, I find him attractive.  In my search to watch everything Renner’s been in, I ended up tuning into the short-lived The Unusuals, which is available on Netflix (I think it’s on Hulu, too).  Despite the fact that it’s a procedural, it boasts a pretty impressive cast and has the perfect sort of dry, dark humor that I love.  There’s only 9 episodes, but it’s totally worth it–Renner is that good.

3. Reading about Prometheus

Disappointed as I was in the movie (seriously, seriously disappointed), I can’t ignore the fact that the movie is polarizing, fascinating, and has the internet all atwitter about what did or didn’t happen.  There are a ton of great articles to look at about the movie, and I can’t stop reading them.

SPOILERS, obviously.

Oh, internet. Never change.

4. Tom Hiddleston does impressions

As great as I thought Hiddleston was in The Avengers, I didn’t ever think of him as being particularly attractive…until I watched this compilation video of him doing impressions.  It’s awesome, you guys.  He does Alan Rickman, Owen Wilson (it’s dead-on), a velociraptor…amazing.  Totally worth watching, even if you’re not really a fan (or even if you don’t know who he is).

5. Bunheads on ABC Family

The network has only aired the pilot, but I’m totally hooked.  I love me some Amy Sherman-Palladino, and I think Sutton Foster is killing it as Michelle.  Her facial expressions alone are worth watching the show for.  There’s a lot of potential here, and if they can work out some of the pacing issues (which are standard fare for a pilot episode), it could be one of the most entertaining shows of the summer.  YES IT COULD.

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m Into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, here, here, and here.

1. Marina & the Diamonds – “Starring Role”

The video for this acoustic version of “Starring Role” by Marina and the Diamonds is pretty captivating.  It’s just her singing with the band, but it’s damn near impossible to take your eyes off her.  I’ve had a love affair with Marina and the Diamonds for a good long while now, but the release of their new album “Electra Heart” has made my life much more full.  The entire thing is great.  Also, I really, really want that dress in the video.

2. Scandal on ABC

I was skeptical about Scandal from the start.  Shonda Rhimes (the woman behind Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice) was taking on law and Washington, D.C. in her newest network drama.  I’m not big on procedurals in general, and I haven’t watched Grey’s anatomy since the third season (which was a season too long, in my opinion).  But I heard some good things about it, and I’m almost out of TV shows to marathon now that the season is coming to an end, and I needed something to soothe my mind in the post-finals week.  Scandal seemed like as good an option as anything.   I like Kerry Washington, after all.

The result?  I’m totally into the show now, but I’ve felt uneasy about it without being able to articulate it.  Rhimes is the only successful, high-profile African American woman running a show on U.S. television right now, and her tendency to do color-blind casting is both admirable and indicative of how white our TV shows are.  However, I stumbled across this piece by Alyssa Rosenberg at Think Progress the other day, and she manages to get across my biggest issues with the show.  This girl and I could totally hang out.

3. Jenna Marbles scaring her dogs with a fart machine

You guys, sometimes the lowest common denominator is actually really funny.  In this case, it’s YouTube sensation and (very funny) blogger Jenna Marbles using a fart machine to scare her two dogs.  I was raised by a mother who thinks that farts are really funny, and as a result, I think they are, too.  This video is worth it for the dogs’ reactions alone.  Watch it and enjoy it.  I’m sorry I’m so sophomoric.

4. The L.A. Complex (Season 1)

Okay, this is a Canadian soap–but let me finish!  The show is kind of like Melrose Place, only actually interesting.  It focuses on an apartment complex in Los Angeles full of artists trying to make it in the city that seems to spit out more and more hopefuls every day.  The reason I started watching it was because I love Jewel Staite (who was excellent on Firefly), but I’ve kept watching it because the show is doing some risky, awesome things.  It’s not perfect–and it’s not, by any means, a really great show–but it’s completely entertaining, and that’s enough for me.

5. Holier Than Thou by Laura Buzo

Okay, you guys.  Buzo’s first novel–Good Oil–is finally being published in the United States under the title Love and Other Perishable Items.  I loved this novel so, so much.  Buzo is definitely an author to watch.  Recently, I discovered that she has another book out.  This one, called Holier Than Thou, is firmly in the “new adult” camp, and I could not be more excited about it.  It looks so good.  Unfortunately, it’s not available in the United States yet.  While I can purchase it online, it’s not cheap.  I have to figure out a way to justify the cost, because I MUST HAVE THIS BOOK.

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, here, and here.

1. Game of Thrones on HBO

Sometimes I feel like I’m really late to the party, and Game of Thrones is definitely one of those cases.  Though I’ve had the first book for a really long time, I just started reading it–and I waited an entire year to start watching the really, really excellent HBO show.  I’m not a high fantasy fan, but this show is absolutely perfect for what I want right now, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it, despite the violence.  It’s extremely well cast (what’s up, Peter Dinklage), has the most incredibly detailed costumes, and is absolutely compelling stuff.  I’m trying not to fly through it too fast because I’m scared I’ll run out of episodes, and then what will I do?!

2. Jessica Lea Mayfield – “Our Hearts are Wrong”

I first heard this song on the most recent season of Parenthood (are you watching that show?  Because you should be), and I’ve quickly become obsessed with her laid-back, almost apathetic sound.  She’s definitely my kind of artist, and so far I’ve been loving the entire album this song comes off of.  Check her out, for sure.

3. The Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon

Okay, you guys.  I thought about not even including this on the list, because I feel so conflicted about the whole thing.  I’m already a little tired of seeing the Fifty Shades controversy circulating on the Internet, and I don’t want to focus on the section of the fandom community who are upset that fan fiction has been turned into a successful (this remains to be seen, I think) trilogy in its own right.

What I am interested in is the fact that this erotica has gone mainstream.  I have questions about why this is the erotic title that has crossed over.  What is it about this particular story that is resonating with readers?  Is it the fact that it’s grounded in something that a lot of people either love or hate?  Is it the fact that the BDSM material in the book is actually fairly vanilla and tame?  The book is really, really badly written and in desperate need of editing, so it can’t be the quality of the story or the prose.  What is it, exactly, that has the pop-culture sphere so fascinated?

Until I can get around to writing a review, check out Forever Young Adult’s take on the book (it’s totally worth it, you guys).

Also, there’s a great drinking game for the book (why didn’t I find this when I was reading it?) at Living by Fiction.

4. Saved by the Bell on Netflix

When I discovered that the entire series (with the exception of The College Years) was on Netflix, I was so excited that I may have squealed.  A little.  The fact that this is literally the most exciting thing in my life right now is not something I’m proud of, but it is what it is.  I love this show so hardcore, you guys.  It’s one of the worst things to ever grace the small screen, but it is so tied to my childhood and I absolutely derive so much pleasure from rewatching it.

5. Nicki Minaj – “Stupid Hoe”

I’m not going to lie: I’ve been a little disappointed by Minaj’s most recent album.  Although there are a couple of great tracks–”Come on a Cone” in particular–too much of the album succumbs to the same innocuous pop that she seems to be fighting against.  While “Stupid Hoe” isn’t even close to being my favorite song on the album, the video is worth watching for the trip-factor alone.  I just really like watching her face, you guys.

Lists & Procrastination: 5 Things I’m into for the Moment

Gentle Readers, welcome!  It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With.  Previous installments can be found hereherehere, hereherehere,  here,  herehere,  here, here, and here.

1. The Other Austen Tumblr

I discovered this Tumblr about a week ago, and I love it. My mom (who is an Austen fanatic) and I spent more time than I’m willing to admit scrolling through the blog, laughing and reminiscing about some of our favorite Austen adaptations.  Very funny, very smart, and super entertaining.

2. Homeland Season 1

I’ve been watching this excellent series for a little while now, and it’s so tense and so exceedingly well done that I find myself thinking about the characters long after an episode has ended.  Claire Danes plays a FBI agent convinced that an American soldier/prisoner of war has turned and is a spy for terrorist forces.  As she gets more embroiled in her obsession of proving she’s right, the soldier struggles with post-traumatic stress and readjusting to family life.  This isn’t ordinarily my type of show, but it is so good, you guys.  So good.

3. Sleigh Bells – Reign of Terror

Admittedly, this band is not for everyone. Often characterized as noise-pop/dance punk, their sound is a little alienating to the casual music listener.  However, I believe their sound grows on you (kind of like a fungus).  Their new album has a bit of an evolution of sound for them, but it’s still pretty ridiculous.

Here’s the video for Comeback Kid (it’s kind of weird):

4. Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver

This one isn’t really a good kind of obsession.  I’ve been thinking about the end of Delirium since I finished it about a week ago, and I can’t shake the feeling of disappointment it left me with.  I knew–knew–how the second book would end when I finished the first book over a year ago, but that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t sort of crushed that my predictions were right.  I wanted Oliver to subvert expectations and make some really smart, really good commentary about youth and love and all that–and she took the safest, most predictable route ever.

Obviously I’m not going to go into detail because I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t read it, but damn.

5. The trailer for Bully

You may have heard about this documentary–it’s been getting some attention since the MPAA rated it R and caused an outrage, since slapping an R-rating on a movie like this pretty much guarantees that it can’t be shown in schools.  There was a petition to get the rating changed, the Weinstein brothers have talked about taking a break from screening their movies for the MPAA, and people, in general, are worked up about this whole thing.  As well they should be.  I think the MPAA is worthless, corrupt, and totally unnecessary.  At any rate, the movie looks absolutely heartbreaking.
