It’s Monday, What are You Reading?

November 30, 2009 at 8:40 am (Uncategorized) (, , , )

It’s Monday, What are you Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by J. Kaye’s Book Blog to discuss what we are reading this week, as well as books completed the previous week.

Books I Completed Last Week:

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer: I finished this book up at The Boy’s cabin over Thanksgiving, and I got a lot of shit for it.  Whatever.

Confessions by Kate Brian: I’m flying through the Private series.  They are the best books to read when I’m working out.

Books I’m Reading This Week:

New Moon by Stephenie Meyer: It’s painful, but not as painful as Breaking Dawn.  I don’t know why I subject myself to it.

Inner Circle by Kate Brian: I told you I’m flying through these.

Daphne by Justine Picardie: It’s about Daphne DuMaurier, author of Rebecca.  I haven’t started it yet, but it’s the book I’m bringing with me when I sub this week (New Moon is too embarrassing to read in public and is relegated to my apartment).

The Road by Cormac McCarthy: I’m still working on this one, too.  I’d like to finish it so I can stop putting it in these posts.

So what are you reading this week?

It’s Monday, What are you Reading?

November 23, 2009 at 3:22 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

It’s Monday, What are you Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by J. Kaye’s Book Blog to discuss what we are reading this week, as well as books completed the previous week.

Books I Completed Last Week:

Invitation Only by Kate Brian: I started this series two weeks ago, and I can’t seem to stop.  I am obsessed.

Untouchable by Kate Brian: See above.

Official Book Club Selection by Kathy Griffin: I love her, and while the book wasn’t as laugh-out loud funny as I was expecting, it was sweet and honest and fun to read.

Books I’m Reading This Week:

The Road by Cormac McCarthy: I’ve had this book forever, and I’m slowly making my way through it.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer: Okay, yes, seeing the movie made me want to reread the series.  But I’m not linking to the book.  That’s me being subversive.

So what are you reading this week?

After 50,000

November 22, 2009 at 9:39 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

I hit 50,000 on Friday, which was my personal goal.  While I’m super proud of that accomplishment, the story isn’t finished and I’m having trouble making it move forward.

I suppose I need to sit down and just do it, but it’s not happening organically.  Which sucks.

I want to finish this thing, y’all.  I really do.

Oh hai there

November 20, 2009 at 1:11 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Did I mention that I’m at 45,000 words?  Because I am.

Today, however, I am totally in procrastination mode.  Refreshing The Question Club page every 45 seconds.  You bet.  Making lists of books that haven’t come out yet?  Absolutely.

I’d really like to hit 50,000 today, but I’m not sure it’s going to happen.

100 Best Movies of the Decade

November 15, 2009 at 11:10 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

The Times (over there in the U.K.) has posted their list of the 100 best films of the past decade.  Obviously, this is the first of hundreds of such lists that we’ll see in the next seven weeks (are there really only seven weeks left in 2009? Good christ.), and while some people call it provocative, I call it random.

Instead of posting the entire list, I’ll just touch on a few highlights:

  • The Devil Wears Prada starts the list out at #100.  I loved this movie (and it is one of those rare cases where the film surpasses the book–the book is absolutely unreadable, you guys), and I’m happy to see anything with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt make the list.
  • Sigh.  Crash is in the 90s, which is probably to be expected, but is disappointing all the same.
  • Anchorman makes the list at number 61.  I let my 10th graders watch this last year on the last day of school.  I had forgotten how funny it was until the end with the whole bear cage thing.
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes in at #16, and this is where the list and I pretty much break up.  It should be #1, or at the very least, be in the top 5.
  • Casino Royale is in the top 10, and I officially question the criteria that went into making this list.
  • The list cheats at #2, putting The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum together.
  • #1 goes to the French film Hidden, which I didn’t even remember seeing until I read the synopsis.  Yikes.

Overall, I’ve seen 46 of the films, which is actually kind of upsetting.  There aren’t a lot of movies on the list that I want to see, although I now want to rent Hidden again so I can remember what the hell it was about.

NaNo Update #2

November 4, 2009 at 9:59 am (Uncategorized) (, , )

I reached 10,000 words yesterday, which was my goal.  Despite being feverish and coughing up a lung, I was able to do it.  The words keep coming, no matter how much I distract myself with The Question Club on LiveJournal or articles on Jezebel.

As I’ve gone through this, I’ve found that the forums on the NaNo website are in general not very interesting.  Or maybe I’m looking in the wrong place?  I get tired of the “ME ME ME ME ME” that tends to go on.  I know that’s what this blog is about, and I recognize that I myself am guilty of it, but it’s still weird to see on the forums that have nothing to do with that.

My attainable goal for today is another 3,000.  If I’m feeling particularly prolific, it would be nice to reach 15,000.

We’ll see.

NaNo Update #1

November 2, 2009 at 9:39 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

I realize that it’s only been two days, but the NaNo experience is going well.  I’m at 7,251 words.  Once I sit down to write, the process is pretty painless.  The internet is still my biggest procrastination tool, though, and that is a problem.

I’m realizing, of course, that this story is going to be a lot longer than I had anticipated.  My hope is that I’ll keep writing after I reach 50,000.  For the first time, I’m confident that I’m going to reach the NaNo goal.

Tomorrow I hope to pass the 10,000 word mark.  All of it is total crap, but at least I’m writing again.  That feels really really good.

It’s Monday. What are you reading?

November 2, 2009 at 8:19 am (Uncategorized) (, , )

It’s Monday, What are you Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by J. Kaye’s Book Blog to discuss what we are reading this week, as well as books completed the previous week.

Books I Completed Last Week:

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.  At The Boy’s urging, I read both of the books in the series so far, and can’t wait to read the third book (which probably won’t be out for another year).

Books I’m Reading This Week:

Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. I’ve been waiting on this book from the library since the summer, and I’m excited that I finally get to read it.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.  I’ve heard so many good things about his A Song of Ice and Fire Series that I have to give it a try.  However, the book is so epic that I’m feeling way intimidated.

So, what are you reading this week?
